No matter how often he turned and flipped, Sam could not get comfortable. Be it the fluffy pillow, the smooth mattress, or the silky sheets—all of the luxuries fell short in the dark palace. He longed for the familiarity of his home—for Annabelle.

Sam got up and dressed in his own clothes, which oddly provided him some comfort. Though they were almost rags, he didn’t have much else from his world. He grabbed his notebook, lit the candle by his bedside, and started flipping through the pages, reading his old words—words from another world. Once he finished, Sam tiptoed toward the door and slipped out of his chambers.

He wanted to get to the library early since he’d lost his chance the night before. As he made his way through the palace, he passed the dining hall, where something caught his attention out of the corner of his eye. Sam peered in and saw the merman in his glass cage, sitting on the oceanic floor. Sam contemplated letting the man be and continuing on his way, but something drew Sam closer, like he couldn’t leave him alone.

Sam approached the tank and looked into the man’s eyes, and the merman stared back at him in fear. “It’s okay; it’s just me.” Sam shook his head. What a stupid thing to do. He can’t possibly hear me behind that glass. But then Sam jumped as he heard another’s voice in his head.

“I can hear you just fine. You need to leave.”

So, Sam had heard right before. This man was somehow talking to him in his own mind. Sam spoke back to him. “You can hear my thoughts?”

The merman nodded. “The ones directed toward me.”

Wow. This was incredible! “How?”

The merman shrugged. “It’s a gift.”

Excitement almost overcame him before the realization of the terrible predicament they found themselves in. When Sam placed his hand on the glass, he flinched at the cold sting of ice. “Aren’t you freezing in there?”

“Doesn’t bother me. I’m used to it.”

“What’s your name?”

The merman was taken aback, giving Sam a look of confusion. “Why?”

Sam stood still for a moment. “Why not?”

The merman shrugged slightly as he contemplated Sam’s answer. “Zael.”

“I’m Sam. I’m sorry we have to be meeting like this.”

Zael gave Sam a blank look that turned to sorrow. “Yeah.”

“How are you today?” Sam tried to lighten the mood, if that were even possible.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

“I’m sorry. I just thought you might be lonely and wanted someone to talk to.”

Zael pushed off the floor and bobbed in front of Sam, emotionless. “I’m not someone you want to talk to. You should leave.”

“All right.” Sam hesitated. “Maybe I can come back another time.”

Zael didn’t answer, and instead swam away to the back of his cage, disappearing from Sam’s sight.

“Bye,” Sam whispered. He turned on his heel and headed into the hallway, looking back at the empty water as he made his way to the library.

The winding halls still confounded him, with the columns of stone and marble and the never-ending paths they seemed to take.
